Carl looks over the Cornish landscape while 'belaying' for Tom as he attempts the difficult climb below. Belaying is the skill of using friction and slack through a series of harnesses and knots to ensure the safety of the climber above or below you.

Carl (20) is a local climber from Falmouth. He is a very competitive athlete and is never content with coming 2nd. After spending even just a few minutes with him it's clear he has a zest for life and loves being outdoors. He is also involved with sailing schools and other outdoor pursuits in the Falmouth area.

It's of vital importance that every piece of kit is checked over before attempting to set up a route. Here, pete checks over some kit while Tom surveys the landscape.

Carl, just completing the 'crux' of the climb. The crux is the single most intense part of the ascent. you can see the ledge below that he's had to pull himself up and over, you can also see the drop below him. A climber has to put his trust entirely in his kit, and climbing partners.

Tom Grantham (20) Stands for the camera just before his first attempt at a new route. Toms's been climbing seriously for 3 years. Like Carl, he is also involved with other outdoor activities like kayaking and mountaineering. He intends to spend as much of his life outdoors as possible.
